WASHINGTON ? Fifteen Republican senators, including Minority Whip John Cornyn (R-TX) and Armed Services Ranking Member James Inhoffe (R-OK), sent a letter to the White House Thursday urging President Obama to withdraw his nomination of Chuck Hagel for Defense Secretary.
?It would be unprecedented for a secretary of defense to take office without the broad base of bipartisan support and confidence needed to serve effectively in this critical position,? the letter states. ?Senator Hagel?s performance at his confirmation hearing was deeply concerning, leading to serious doubts about his basic competence to meet the substantial demands of the office.?
The letter goes on to accuse Hagel of holding an ?erratic record? and making ?disconcerting? remarks on Israel.
Senate Democrats attempted to move Hagel?s confirmation to an up or down vote last week but failed to garner the 60 votes needed to proceed. A second vote will occur next week and Hagel will likely find support from several Republicans, including Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL) who announced Thursday that he would back the former Nebraska senator.
